The rock art of early civilisations is spread across North Africa, into which moved the Phoenicians and Romans. Their fabulous wealth is evident from their magnificent cities and villas decorated with wonderful mosaics. Following the collapse of Byzantine control, the early Muslims developed  their own distinctive 'Magreb' form of Islamic art and architecture, closely linked to the Moorish styles of Southern Spain.
