After 1085 the Reconquista of Spain gathered momentum as Christians dispelled  Moors yet paid homage to the beauty of their art and architecture. El Greco’s relationship with the city of Toledo was, professionally and personally bitter sweet. When the Spanish capital moved to Madrid in 1561, Velazquez painted the court with its glittering array of Golden Age heroes.
