Vermeer is now one of the most admired of all of the Dutch Masters but until the mid 19th century he had been forgotten and much of his work was attributed to other painters. We still know comparatively little about his life, official records tell us that he was the son of an inn keeper, became a Master of the Delft Guild of Painters, married, had eleven children and died in debt. Recent research has revealed information about his painstaking painting technique, his use of perspective and optical devices but we still do not know how he trained or how he evolved the cool and refined harmonies that characterize his work. In this study day we will attempt to shed light on The Exquisite World of Johannes Vermeer.
